Refocusing on ‘Screening In’ and More Recruiting Trends for 2022
The Story
Recently, recruiting experts from across the US gathered to discuss the best talent attraction strategies for 2022. Among those were screening in — or hiring for competencies and training on the specific role, instead of filtering out candidates through overselection — as well as using technology to reduce the administrative burden on recruiters and optimizing the candidate experience.

What You Should Know
Today, applying for jobs can leave candidates feeling disheartened. SHRM’s panel discussion emphasized the importance of avoiding the “black hole” experience (when candidates never hear back after applying) by ensuring every applicant gets a real response. Other strategies to enhance recruiting could include using authentic employer branding, and implementing formal and informal training programs to build skills for new hires, which would allow for the “screening in” of a broader pool of candidates, instead of filtering out potentially worthy talent.

The Future Of Recruiting Is AI-powered Assessments! But Don’t Sweat It
The Story
As with many roles, AI is being widely implemented in recruiting. Specifically, AI-powered hiring assessments are used to evaluate candidates, leveraging capabilities like machine learning algorithms to identify ideal matches for organizations.

What You Should Know
While there are many things AI can do well, there should be no fear of the technology taking over recruiters’ roles. In fact, the purpose of AI-powered assessments is to simply make recruiters’ jobs easier, not to replace them. While the leading tools can even use technology to remove biases, it will never be able to read candidates to the degree that an experienced recruiter can. Recruiters can implement AI strategically throughout certain steps of the hiring process to reduce their administrative burden, but should understand its limitations — which is where human expertise comes in.

The Scenic Route to Cardiothoracic Surgery
The Story
Entering the world of cardiothoracic surgery can be daunting — especially for international medical graduates (IMGs). Recruiters seeking to hire IMGs can learn from the experiences of Mahnoor Imran, MD, who shares her insights in a recent Aspiring CT Surgeons Blog for The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

What You Should Know
According to Imran, many of the odds were stacked against her in her pursuit to become a surgeon in the US. While she took the self-described “scenic route” to fulfill her career aspirations, there were many tools that helped her along the way, including strong mentorships. Providing these and other resources for IMG candidates may help recruiters foster their career success.

Wisdom
Most of us have been told that wisdom comes with age and life experience, so waiting for wisdom to develop over time has been seen as a somewhat passive process. In reality, wisdom can be developed and utilized now in our work and personal lives, which is great news!

The article Why You Need Wisdom and How to Be (More) Wise - According to Science outlines five strategies for developing wisdom:
  1. Consider others - The wise person thinks about how their actions will affect those around them.
  2. Manage yourself - As you develop wisdom, actively reflect on your own state of mind, opinions, and attitudes.
  3. Seek diversity - Wisdom demands ongoing learning, and this can only come from true openness to different points of view and a belief that we don’t already have all the answers.
  4. Embrace uncertainty - The maturity of wisdom allows us to make judgements, take action, and be constructive, even without much clarity.
  5. Take a long term view - Wisdom is built through putting aside short-term gain to make decisions that serve longer term goals.
Wisdom is associated with decreased loneliness and increased compassion, engagement, happiness, fulfillment, and even a healthy gut microbiome! So let’s stop being passive and get to work on developing wisdom together.
