Calling healthcare burnout a crisis is an ‘understatement,’ CDC says
The Story |
According to new survey data published by the CDC, the state of mental health among healthcare workers is grim. Nearly half of those surveyed experienced burnout in 2022, and the number of people looking to switch careers increased by nearly 50%. CDC officials are warning that U.S. healthcare systems have reached a breaking point and are calling on leaders to develop strategies for addressing the crisis. |
What You Should Know |
People working in healthcare are already well aware of the burnout crisis among providers. Yet, acknowledgement from organizations like the CDC offers hope that help may be on the horizon. The CDC suggests proactively addressing workers’ mental health by involving them in decision making, decreasing harassment, and offering increased support from supervisors. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health will also be launching a campaign for hospital leaders to improve workers’ wellbeing, and the Biden administration has dedicated $103 million to address burnout among healthcare workers.

Creating Welcoming Work Environments for All Diverse People
The Story |
Data from McKinsey & Company show that companies who lead in terms of ethnic diversity are 33% more likely to outperform their counterparts. The ability to create a welcoming work environment for all diverse individuals comes down to several key factors. From practicing active listening to cultivating a diverse leadership team, there are many ways hospitals can not only employ, but also engage and accommodate employees with diverse backgrounds.
What You Should Know |
Diversity is often perceived as a less tangible pursuit for healthcare organizations, but there are several specific tactics recruiters and other parties can deploy to create a supportive and welcoming environment for diverse employees. Offering flexible work arrangements to accommodate various holidays and schedules is a great place to start. Other strategies could include soliciting feedback about diversity and inclusion initiatives, encouraging employees to stand up against and report any instances of discrimination, and hosting workshops on diversity.

California sets $25 per hour minimum wage for healthcare workers |
The Story |
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law in October which will raise the minimum wage for healthcare workers nearly ten dollars, from $15.50 to $25 per hour. The wage increase will begin rolling out in 2024, with implementation dates varying for different types of facilities. Hospitals with a high mix of Medicare and Medi-Cal patients will have until 2033 to raise minimum wage, for instance. |
What You Should Know |
The new minimum wage law has been widely supported by California healthcare unions and is anticipated to affect nearly half a million employees. Its objective is to help the state’s healthcare workers cover the costs of basic needs, which roughly half struggle with and are therefore enrolled in public safety net programs. Other advocates for the bill include the California Hospital Association, who say the pay increase will offer predictability for hospitals and healthcare systems.
