What Is a Stay Interview? 13 Questions to Ask. Plus, best practices for administering productive stay interviews.
The Story
Stay interviews can be a powerful tool for retaining healthcare providers and clinicians. These one-on-one meetings are conducted with high-performing, long-term employees and allow you to understand what they value in your organization. They provide the opportunity to prevent problems from recurring and give employers the chance to learn from past mistakes.

What You Should Know
Ensuring good outcomes from your stay interviews depends on the types of questions you ask, and whether you follow up on responses. Consider asking providers and clinicians about what they like and dislike most about work, how they’d rate their work/life balance, whether they feel recognized for their efforts, what causes anxieties and frustrations, and what could be done to make their experience better.

How to Recruit During a Recession
The Story
With the prospect of a recession looming large, recruiters must plan ahead and think about strategies for attracting talent in any economic conditions. For now, recruiters can leverage the qualities that make their job openings stand out, improve the visibility of their job opportunities, be more proactive when following up with candidates, and seek out candidates who won’t have to relocate to accept your position.

Peer comparison linked to increased physician burnout: study
The Story
While there are many factors that can contribute to physician burnout, one factor that has been discovered recently is peer comparison. According to research released in September, physicians who are compared to one another have lower job satisfaction and higher levels of burnout. The study spanned five months and analyzed more than 199 physicians.

What You Should Know
Healthcare organizations are always seeking ways to reduce physician burnout and increase job satisfaction. While it may not be the be-all and end-all solution, avoiding ranking or comparative records could help to keep physicians happier. According to the study, physicians who were ranked felt frustrated by being pit against their peers and being reduced to a single metric, and instead wished for a more collaborative and supportive environment.

Leadership Reflections

Expertise
While working on some vendor contract renewals, I’ve been reflecting on the importance of expertise. Working with business partners can be seen as a necessary evil but when the partner has expertise, the value and benefits can be deeply felt by your entire team.

  1. Experts ask the right questions - Good questions cut through the noise and provide focus on important factors for decision making, resulting in accelerated timelines and overall cost savings.
  2. Experts provide unique perspectives - They have a wealth of experience, can anticipate industry trends, and offer out-of-the-box solutions to challenging problems.
  3. Experts have deep industry knowledge - Specific knowledge = significant value for you and your team.
  4. Experts can stabilize your team - When utilizing an expert’s experience and wisdom, you can address issues quickly and make order out of chaos.
  5. Experts will make more people want to work for you - Working with experts boosts your brand and builds trust with your current team and prospective providers.
